The Ultimate Moving Home Checklist

Back to news

Moving house can be both exciting and daunting. That’s why we’ve written the ultimate 21-step moving home checklist to tip the scales in favour of exciting; keeping you organised and looking forward to the change with positivity rather than trepidation.

Whether you’re relocating to a new city, moving to a bigger home, or downsizing to a cosier space, a well-organised moving checklist can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth transition. With the right guidance, you can navigate the intricacies of a move, avoid common stumbling blocks, and make your new house truly feel like a home in no time at all.

In 40+ years’ of selling and renting properties, we’ve seen it all. Here’s our most valuable lessons in a simple checklist to help get you moving:

1. Start Early:

  • Begin planning at least 2-3 months before your moving date.
  • Where possible, create a detailed timeline to stay organised.

2. Get to Know Your New Neighbourhood:

  • Explore your new surroundings and find essential services like supermarkets, local medical facilities, and schools if needed.

3. Declutter:

  • Sort through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, or discard.
  • Host a garage sale or list items online to lighten your load. Facebook Marketplace and Vinted are popular in the local community and have easy sales processes with no cost to you.

4. Hire Professional Movers:

  • Research reputable moving companies and request quotes.
  • Book your chosen movers well in advance to secure your preferred date.

5. Collect Packing Supplies:

  • Stock up on sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and packing paper if you’re moving independently. Some moving companies can take care of all of this for you but this will cost more.
  • Don’t forget labels and markers for clear labelling.

6. Pack Methodically:

  • Start with non-essential items and seasonal belongings.
  • Clearly label boxes with room names and contents for easy unpacking. Use a colour code or system for added ease and create a key for all involved in the moving process to make the unloading at the final destination run more smoothly.
  • Leave a small box for valuables that you want to keep with you on the day.

7. Create an Essentials Box:

  • Pack a box with immediate essentials like toiletries, clothes, and important documents.
  • Keep this box with you during the move for quick access.

8. Create an Inventory:

  • Keep a detailed list of your belongings for insurance purposes.
  • Photograph valuable items.

9. Let Friends and family know you’re moving:

  • Inform close friends and neighbours of your move.
  • Consider hosting a farewell gathering as your final event in your home, if you enjoy entertaining.

10. Disassemble Furniture:

  • Unless you’ve arranged for your removal company to do it, start disassembling large furniture pieces for easier transportation. Keep screws and hardware in labelled bags.

11. Clean Your Current Home:

  • Thoroughly clean and tidy your old home before moving out.
  • Check for any items left behind.

12. Confirm Moving Day Details:

  • Confirm the moving date, time, and location with your chosen moving company.
  • Provide clear directions to your new address.

13. Pack an Overnight Bag:

  • Pack a bag with clothes, toiletries, and essentials for the first night in your new home.
  • Avoid scrambling to find what you need amidst the unpacking chaos.

14. Check the Weather Forecast:

  • If you’re moving during unpredictable UK weather, prepare accordingly with rain gear or extra blankets.

15. Moving Day:

  • Stay organised and supervise the movers.
  • Take photos of the old and new property’s condition for reference.
  • Take meter readings at both your old home and your new one.

16. Unpack Strategically:

  • Start with essential rooms like the kitchen and bedroom.
  • Take your time to unpack and arrange your belongings thoughtfully so you don’t have to redo it later on.

17. Safety First:

  • Install or update security measures, such as locks and alarms.
  • Familiarise yourself with emergency services in your new area.

18. Change Your Address:

  • Notify the post office, banks, and relevant agencies of your new address.
  • Redirect your mail to your new home.

19. Meet the Neighbours:

  • Introduce yourself to your new neighbours. Building a friendly relationship can make your new community feel like home.

20. Settle In:

  • Take your time to decorate and personalise your new space.
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere that suits your style.
  • Have a read of our blog here discussing How Interior Design Can Add Value To Your Home. It’s good practice to always consider how updates, developments and changes to your home will impact the resale value of your home in the future.

21. Enjoy Your New Home:

  • Finally, take the time to relax and enjoy your new home in West Sussex.
  • Explore the local culture, make new friends, and create lasting memories.

Moving house is a significant life event. With careful planning and organisation, you can minimise stress and ensure a smooth transition into your new home. Stay on top of the moving process by following these steps, and you’ll be well-prepared for a successful move that allows you to embrace the next exciting chapter of your life with confidence.

Excellent service

Very happy with their services in selling my flat. The team was always very straightforward and professional. Pauline Jones in particular always kept me updated and was super efficient.

Not just another Buyer!

I had nothing but a positive experience with Sims Williams. Very helpful team, always responded quickly and will go above and beyond to make sure the process is as easy and stress free as possible. Emma was amazing, totally professional but extremely friendly, giving advise and opinions that were not always related to the property. Moving from a completely different county and not always knowing who to ask or contact, Emma was always on hand to help. Emma made me feel that we were not just another buyer but someone she was interested in. Thank you.
Sam - Buyer - Jun 17th, 2021

Literally unsurpassed, Complete service.

Right from the start of the process with the valuation and discussion about marketing right through to the presentation of the property and keeping on top of the many moving parts, which can go wrong, Sims Williams were all over it. They managed to help us sell our property at exactly the price that it was valued for in a very difficult market. They also listened to our concerns and gave us the confidence to begin at a price below that valuation, creating more interest and facilitating the eventual sale which was agreed in the week of the first viewing. The whole team are completely dedicated and the valuations are not over blind just to attract the maximum amount of clientele. We went with them because we purchased a house from the year before and they were just as professional than as they were this time. I don’t know how else to say this, but I don’t know if another agency could’ve done this job in the timeframes that we expected and got the result that we did. I would always use them wherever they operate in the area that we are buying or selling. Thanks a lot John, Julia, Robin & Susie, you’ve made our year.

Above and beyond!

I cannot praise John and the Bognor Regis Sims Williams team highly enough. Through a difficult year with sales falling through and second attempts, they have been a constant source of strength and support. The work that they do is worth much more than the fee they charge because they care about their clients and that shines through in everything that they do. I would not only highly recommend them but would suggest that you will not find a better agent for your sale or purchase and having them on your side through the stress is worth it's weight in gold. Thank you all so much.

Thank you so much Jo for all your help with getting us into our flat. Jo was very professional from start to finish and made the rental process feel easy. We have nothing to fault and would definitely use Sims Williams again in the future with any rental or mortgage services.

The lovely ladies at Sims Williams!

Tamsin, Emma, Lynne and Helena are a dream to deal with. The sale of my Arundel property was not without hitches but they kept it on course and successfully completed the sale for me. It's not the first time I have sold/purchased through Tamsin and her lovely ladies and highly recommend them. Thank you!
Sally - Vendor - Apr 6th, 2021

We were impressed by the efficiency and professionalism shown by all the members of the team. They were friendly and reassuring during what was a stressful time for us, particularly with the current restrictions we are all experiencing. We would not hesitate to recommend Sims Williams to anyone planning to buy a property in the area.
Dorothy - Buyer - Feb 1st, 2021

Throughout the 10-month process of selling during two lockdowns, we received a totally professional, helpful and friendly service from everyone at SW at every stage.
