Space-saving tips for small homes

Back to news

Living in a compact space doesn’t mean compromising on comfort or style. Bigger is not always better, and certainly not always feasible when it comes to your home! With the right strategies and clever design solutions, you can create a functional and visually appealing living environment that maximises every inch of your home.

In this blog, we will explore various tips and techniques that will help you optimise your small space without sacrificing your personal style.

Clever Storage Solutions:

One of the key challenges in small property is finding adequate storage space. However, with smart storage solutions, you can efficiently make use of every nook and cranny. Don’t be afraid to get creative but remember that in a small home, functionality is key.

Consider these three starting ideas:

  • Vertical Storage: embrace the vertical space in your home by installing tall bookshelves, wall-mounted cabinets, and floating shelves. These not only provide storage but also draw the eyes upward, creating an illusion of a larger space.
  • Multi-Purpose Furniture: invest in furniture pieces that serve multiple functions. For example, choose a storage ottoman that can store blankets and double as a coffee table. Opt for a bed with built-in drawers or a sofa with hidden storage compartments.
  • Utilise Underutilised Spaces: make the most of underutilised areas such as the space under the stairs, inside cupboard doors, or above cabinets. Install custom shelving or organisers to maximise these spaces and create additional storage.

Optimal Furniture Arrangement:

Strategic furniture placement is a game-changer in small homes; it allows homeowners to create an open and spacious feel even in the smallest of spaces.

Consider the following tips:

  • Scale and Proportion: choose furniture that is appropriately scaled for your space. Avoid oversized pieces that can overwhelm the room. Opt for sleek, compact furniture with clean lines that provide functionality without occupying excessive floor space.
  • Multipurpose Furniture: select furniture items that serve multiple purposes. For instance, a dining table that can be folded against the wall when not in use or a sofa bed for accommodating guests. In doing so, you can maximise functionality while minimising the number of furniture pieces in each room.
  • Create Visual Flow: arrange furniture to create an open flow of movement. Avoid blocking high-traffic areas and aim for an uncluttered, minimalistic layout. Consider using rugs to define separate zones within a small space while maintaining a sense of cohesion.

Enhancing Visual Space:

A well-designed small home can give the illusion of spaciousness.

Consider these visual tricks to amplify the perceived size of your space:

  • Light and Bright Colours: opt for a light and neutral colour palette for walls, ceilings, and furniture. Lighter shades reflect more natural light, making a room feel more airy and open. Feel free to play with pops of colour through accessories or artwork to add personality without overwhelming the space. It also makes future redecorating a lot easier!
  • Mirrors and Reflective Surfaces: strategically placed mirrors can create the illusion of depth and reflect light, making a room appear larger. Incorporate reflective surfaces such as glass tabletops or mirrored cabinets to amplify the sense of openness.
  • Streamlined Window Treatments: keep window treatments (decorations and styling) minimal and streamlined to allow maximum natural light into the room. Opt for sheer curtains or blinds that can be easily opened and closed to control privacy and temperature.

THINKING ABOUT RENTING?

I have bought and sold houses through sims williams over the past few years, in October we decided to rent our house for a year. We were very uneasy about should we, what if etc. We called David to have a chat, he put our minds at rest and we went ahead and went on the rental market. 4 viewing within 48 hours and its rented. The Chichester branch is just brilliant and you feel they are there for you. Give him a call if you're wondering about selling/Renting.

knowledgeable and efficient

I would like to say I was very happy with the service I received from Sims Williams and would highly recommend you to anyone selling, or indeed buying a property. I was always able to speak to someone in person whenever I had a query or question. The staff are all friendly, knowledgeable and efficient which made the whole process of buying and selling less stressful. Having a named professional as a primary contact was really reassuring. Calum was always aware of and managing any glitches even before I knew about them. He communicated well with my solicitor and made sure I was up to date at all times. He was also very good at explaining parts of the process I didn’t understand. I will definitely be using your team again in the future for buying, selling or renting out.

Excellent service

I have bought and sold a number of properties through the lovely ladies at SW, Arundel. They are always professional and reliable but with a personal touch, which is most appreciated at what can be a very stressful time. The ladies are always just a phone call away if reassurance is needed at any time and they work very closely with a client's solicitor, cutting out the need to be constantly chasing every stage of the transactions. I highly recommend SW. I think and want this is going to be my 'forever' home but they've heard that one before so no doubt I will be in touch in due course but maybe just to say hello!

Always Helpful

We have been very happy with the Arundel Office who helped us consistently with the numerous problems that came up with the purchase of our wonderful new home. Particular mention needs to go to Emma for her constant endeavours to sort things out, and Tamsin waiting outside the office to hand over the keys at the eleventh hour. Thank you all.

Impeccable friendly service

We sold and bought through the Walberton office and received excellent service throughout on both transactions. Richard and his team work so well together and having a dedicated sales progressor was a real bonus. Their diligence and care helped make a stressful time bearable! I have no hesitation in recommending their services.
